Barnyard Bloodsuckers  Made in Unreal Engine 5

You are a rancher trying to defend your herd from evil vampire cows. Collect ammo and beans around your ranch to help sus out and defeat the evil cows before its too late!

Tech Demo

I was the main developer for this project. I coded most of the cow behavior AI and rancher abilities. As well as the main camera system set up and programing the tracking bar UI.

I set up the camera system to swap to different camera views placed around the map and track the number of vampires. I set up most of the programing behind the HUD UI. Such as the progress bar at the top and dialog UI.

Normal cows can randomly wander the ranch. They will flee when the rancher shoots the gun close enough. If they are killed by a vampire, they become a vampire after 30 sec if not buried. Normal cows will die in one hit.

Vampire cows can act as normal cow if the player is close enough. They will hunt, attack, and then flee from normal cows. They can die in 1-4 hits depending on how full they are from feeding on other cows. If there are enough vampires, the head vampire (starting vampire) will command all others to attack the player. This causes the vampires to run at the player wherever they are. The player can win if they kill all vampires and bury all turning cows.

The rancher can shoot and kill cows , and ​use the shovel to bury dead cows, stopping them from reviving as vampires. The rancher's health is the same as their energy bar for sprinting. If the player sprints too much, they become exhausted and must recover a bit before they can sprint again. Beans and staying at cameras can refill your energy bar. The energy bar only refills half way on its own.​ The player cant pick up ammo or beans if they have the shovel out.

The Process

  • Started by making the cows choose a random point to wander to, and making sure the vampire cow could hunt normal cows.

  • Simple UI was added for energy and ammo.

  • The camera system started as a list of buttons, but turned into A/D swap later on. 

  • A UI progress bar was added to track dead cows

  • Cows ran away from the gunshot if they were close enough 

  • the shovel now blocks player from picking items up and 

  • The camera screen was added and changed to swap on A/D

  • Infinite bean and ammo locations added

  • A dead cow spawns whenever you kill a normal cow

  • If you kill a normal cow, then vampires enter a frenzy

  • With enough vampires, there will be a group attack
